The State of the Economy: A Christian Perspective on Struggle and Hope- by Tom Faber

It is no secret that life has gotten expensive. For many of us, the cost of housing, groceries, utilities, and even the basics has skyrocketed. Income has not kept pace, and the pressure is real. You feel it at the grocery store. You see it in the stack of bills on the counter. You hear it in the conversations of friends who are quietly wondering how long they can keep this up.

But as followers of Christ, we are called to see this through a different lens. We do not ignore the reality, but we anchor ourselves in truth.

Scriptures to Stand On

  • Philippians 4:19 (NLT): “And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.”

  • Matthew 6:31–33 (NLT): “So do not worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’... Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”

  • Psalm 37:25 (NLT): “Once I was young, and now I am old. Yet I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread.”

These verses are not simply nice to read. They are promises from the One who owns it all.

Understanding the Times
We are living in a moment where inflation is high, wages feel stagnant, and many families are making painful choices just to get by. Economists have their explanations such as global markets, supply chain disruptions, and interest rates. Scripture has a way of peeling back the surface to reveal deeper truths.

The Bible is clear that earthly systems will rise and fall. Kingdoms come and go, money gains and loses value, but God’s economy never falters. He is not limited by a weak stock market or high gas prices.

Why We Are Feeling the Squeeze
Part of this is the natural ebb and flow of a broken world. Sin has touched every part of creation, including how we handle resources. Sometimes greed at the top makes life harder for those at the bottom. Other times it is the result of global events we cannot control. In every season the believer is reminded that we are in the world but not of it.

Answers That Hold

  • Return to stewardship: Be faithful with what God has given, no matter how small.

  • Live generously: The temptation is to hold tighter, but generosity breaks fear’s grip.

  • Seek wisdom: Ask God for discernment in spending, saving, and earning.

  • Build community: In Acts 2, believers met each other’s needs. We need that same unity today.

Overcoming Doubt and Fear
Fear will try to convince you that God will not show up this time. Doubt will whisper that the promises are for someone else and not for you. Both are liars.

Faith says, “God brought me through before, and He will again.” Hope says, “I may not see the way, but I trust the One who makes the way.” Peace comes when we hand Him the burden and walk in obedience, even when the math does not add up.

We cannot always fix the economy, but we can anchor ourselves in a Kingdom that cannot be shaken. The grocery bill may rise, but so does our confidence that the Lord is our Shepherd and we will lack nothing.
